I wanted to make something to share my love of birds that would be more participatory than my paintings and sketches, so I decided to make a coloring book. I wanted to include only birds that are actually found in the Raleigh area. I hope to make an NC birds edition in the future, but I needed to start small.
I selected eight of my existing sketches, scanned them and distilled them down to the lines that are most important to describing a particular bird. I added weight to the outlines and created the kind of image you’d find in the typical old-school coloring book. After designing a cover, I printed everything out on letter-sized paper (premium printer paper and 65-lb cover stock) that I folded and stapled to create 5.5″ x 8.5″ booklets.
Birds: A Coloring Book is available from me with free crayons (while they last). The eight birds featured in this edition are: Carolina Wren, Eastern Bluebird, American Robin, Pileated Woodpecker, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Northern Cardinal, Tufted Titmouse and Great Horned Owl.
