The dark-eyed junco is a common bird across North America and is found in my area mainly in the winter. They mostly eat seeds and can sometimes be seen at feeders, but more likely they’ll be on the ground underneath a feeder, foraging for seeds that other birds have dropped. The junco is one of the few birds that actually like the millet that is used as filler in so many bird seed mixes. If you really want to attract birds, put out sunflower seeds! The juncos will eat the millet, but even they would rather have the sunflower seeds. This dark-eyed junco was photographed by me in Raleigh, NC, in January 2023. The original watercolor is 5.5″x8.”
